Beyond The Stage

Published by Marsilio: Luca Beatrice’s posthumous Book

Just a few months after the passing of Luca Beatrice, “La commedia dell’arte. Dietro le quinte del contemporaneo tra musei, mercato e provocazioni” (The comedy of art. Behind the scenes of the contemporary between museums, market and provocation”) stands as an intellectual testament encapsulating the multifaceted figure of the historian, teacher, and curator. Published posthumously by Marsilio Editori, the book distances itself from the rhetoric of the armchair critic and becomes a sharp, clear-eyed reflection on the contemporary art world.
Beatrice blends his passions for football, politics, and a personal vision of art history with academic rigor and irony. His writing reads like a radio commentary, dramatic yet serious, inviting the reader to reflect on the contradictions of today’s cultural landscape.
The author examines the museum system, the art market, and the provocations that define the artistic horizon. Though disenchanted at times, he recognizes in the contemporary a potential for “naive beauty” worth preserving, far from the “violence of taste” that threatens to destroy the very idea of art.
In La commedia dell’arte (The comedy of art), Beatrice does not merely observe the art world: he interprets it, dissects it, and offers it back to the reader in all its complexity. Despite the often ironic tone and his critique of a system seemingly detached from its original mission, the essay never veers into cynicism. Instead, it reveals a radical and lucid vision of the present, where the act of creating something new and innovative, even in paradox, never ceases to amaze.
