Metaphysical Thought - Monfalcone: Giorgio de Chirico at the Galleria Comunale

The exhibition features fifty paintings documenting the master’s entire creative journey

An invitation to enter the complex metaphysical laboratory of one of the 20th century’s most enigmatic artists, through a journey that prioritizes the intensity of thought over historical linearity: this is the essence of the exhibition “Giorgio de Chirico. La meccanica del pensiero”. It explores the entire universe of the master from Volos, celebrating his genius with a selection of over fifty paintings spanning the artist’s entire creative career.

The EXHIBIT pays tribute to the father of Metaphysical painting and his transition through Greek, Italian, and German cultures

Open at the Galleria comunale d’arte contemporanea until April 6th, the exhibition - curated by Cesare Orler - pays homage to the origins of the father of Metaphysical painting. It tracks his passage through Greek, Italian, and German cultures, touching upon all the countries that forged his creative genius. The itinerary is divided into three rooms and six thematic sections, designed as focal points for reflection on de Chirico’s recurring themes: from the iconic Metaphysical squares, deserted and timeless, to still lifes - symbols of vital energy and tools for exploring the relationship between light and surface; from horses and knights laden with symbolism to Ligurian and Venetian landscapes. It also features idealized and mythologized figures and portraits, leading to his drawings - a fundamental tool of his creative practice (“Everything in painting is a problem of drawing”) - which offer a profound look into de Chirico’s intellectual complexity and lyricism.

The journey is organized into six thematic sections covering all key painting subjects: Metaphysical squares, still lifes, horses and knights, Venetian and Ligurian landscapes

Notable highlights include the famous Plastico dei Bagni Misteriosi (1973) and works from prestigious museum institutions such as the National gallery of modern and contemporary art (GNAMC) in Rome and MART in Rovereto, as well as private collections rarely open to the public, offering a rare and coherent selection.

“La meccanica del pensiero” is thus an invitation to engage with the many ways de Chirico treated motifs and subjects: from Metaphysical art to Neo-Metaphysics, from the Classicist reworkings of later years to the bare depths of his drawings, where thought and image merge like a silent conference between art and philosophy. Included in the calendar of “GO! 2025 Nova Gorica - Gorizia European Capital of Culture”, the exhibition is part of an institutional project organized by the Municipality of Monfalcone in synergy with the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, reinforcing the city’s role as a cultural hub. The exhibition is accompanied by a detailed catalog published by Gaspari, featuring texts by the curator as well as Andrea Daffra, Elena Lazzarini, Elisa Prete, and Francesco Mutti.

Among the most significant pieces are the Plastico dei Bagni Misteriosi (1973) and other works on loan from prestigious institutions such as the GNAMC in Rome and MART in Rovereto
