Palazzo Reale debuts a site-specific exhibition by Anselm Kiefer. “Le alchimiste” is a showcase consisting of 40 monumental canvases that weave together esotericism and social contemporaneity. The works share a deep bond with the city of Milan: it was here that Caterina Sforza lived, author of a manuscript containing over 400 alchemical recipes and formulas.
Alongside her appear numerous other female figures - long-standing icons of occult allure linked to the Hermetic world - including Isabella Cortese, Mary the Jewess, and Marie Meurdrac, among others.
Kiefer’s organic style of painting is profoundly consistent with these themes: the faces of this arcane pantheon seem to be reborn from the very reliefs of the pictorial matter.
Curated by Gabriella Belli.
