The Reina Sofía is currently hosting the exhibition “Néstor Reencountered”, offering a new perspective on a master often overlooked by critics.
Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre, originally from the Canary Islands, was a multifaceted talent: a painter of oils and murals, a set designer, and a fashion stylist. He moved early on to Barcelona, where he connected with the vibrant cultural circles of the Belle Époque. Later, he relocated to Madrid, where he formed relationships with Federico García Lorca and a young Salvador Dalí. The latter appreciated his style, suspended between proto-surrealism and symbolism, with strong Art Deco influences.
Néstor never gained full recognition from the broader public, except in his homeland. Today, he appears as a hidden treasure of Iberian art.
Curated by Juan Vicente Aliaga.
Until September 8.
