Beyond the Visible - Reggio Calabria, retrospective of Cesare Berlingeri at Palazzo della cultura

On show a wide range of artworks from 1967 to 2022

A personal exhibition of Cesare Berlingeri, curated
by Domenico Piraina, is running until February 18 at Palazzo della cultura "Pasquino Crupi". The initiative, as final event of the fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the discovery of the Riace Bronzes, is produced by the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, with the collaboration of the Cesare Berlingeri ETS Foundation. The exhibition path, through the Berlingeri folded paintings, is a journey in osmosis with the artist’s world, between canvas, pigments, oils, glue and polyvinyl foams, where the images wrap on themselves, becoming thought, space and colour.

BORN IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN ASPROMONTE, TO DEEPEN HIS KNOWLEDGE,
HE TRAVELS TO ROME, FLORENCE, MILAN AND THROUGH EURO

In these endless colour and material combinations, the Fontana’s concetti spaziali, the Manzoni’s achrome, the Burri’s sacchi (sacks) are found; but also the Losavio study of light, the starry skies and blue of the Cappella degli Scrovegni by Giotto, the dance by Matisse and the Malevic ̆’s black square. The artist was born in Cittanova, a small village in Aspromonte, in the land of Calabria, full of beauty and mystery; he feels very connected to it, even if his artistic vocation led him to travel to know the greats of the history of art. He travels to Rome, Florence, Milan and through Europe, and sees Picasso, Cézanne and Brancusi etc.; he understands how the subtraction

is necessary to give strength, the compositional synthesis to produce a new visual reality, enigmatic, spiritual. Indeed, as Piraina writes in the catalogue: "In front of these works one can even kneel and pray, not to ask but to give thanks for the beauty that is given to us, a beauty that shakes, attracts, moves". Berlingeri’s ability is to lead the viewer into a renewed vision of things, free of moral judgements or political positions; he wants to lead the dialogue towards new places only in the artistic dimensions.

IMAGES WRAP ON THEMSELVES, BECOMING THOUGHT, SPACE AND COLOUR

This is how Berlingeri defines his work: “the fold is a border area between two opposite and complementary worlds, between a visible and an invisible, between light and darkness”: this mysterious and evocative world, through 50 years of his work, is shown in the exhibition “Cesare Berlingeri.
Tra il visibile e l’invisibile. Opere 1967- 2022”. This represents a wonderful opportunity to explore his painting places and atmosphere, through a thematic and analog itinerary, not a chronological one.
