Is it about safeguarding the land or painting? Walking through Haley Mellin’s solo exhibition at Museo Novecento, one can truly connect with the most vibrant aspects of nature. It is a journey where art becomes a form of awareness and activism regarding biodiversity, an authentic artistic activism. Mellin meticulously reinterprets landscapes - through sketches and paintings - that she seeks to protect through her non-profit initiative, Art into Acres. However, these are not mere reproductions intended to showcase the variety and richness of environments. As the artist herself states: “For me, painting is about preserving a particular mental state - a way of being in and with nature. It’s a tribute, not an alteration; it’s time, observation, study, listening, while nature speaks”.
For her, activism also involves the decision to forgo electricity in order to reduce emissions. Furthermore, in line with the project she founded, her studio mirrors the same natural environments in which she works.
