GAM pays tribute to Lothar Baumgarten with an exhibition hosted in the museum’s videotheque. The showcase presents a series of photographs and videos tracing the artist’s stay in the Amazon, where he lived for over a year in the late 1970s.
Acting almost as an anthropologist, Baumgarten undertook an immersive experience, coming into close contact with the Yanomami indigenous people. This series does not merely report a scientific-anthropological investigation into semi-unknown populations; instead, it contributes to a creative reflection rich in interpretive layers in constant dialogue with one another.
The legacy of Joseph Beuys - whose student Baumgarten was - is evident here, particularly in their shared conception of art as a form of cognitive practice.
Curated by Chiara Bertola. Until March 1st.
